1. WHERE WERE YOU BORN, WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?


I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, but my father was a preacher so we
moved a couple of times, but I grew up mostly in Jacksonville, Florida.
My parents are from east Texas, so I spent a lot of time there while I
was growing up too.

2. WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MUSICAL MEMORY?

Hearing a bluegrass band in Nashville about 1965 at an outside concert.


3. WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU OWNED?

The first one I ever bought was "Bridge Over Troubled Waters", Simon &
Garfunkel.

4. WHEN AND WHERE WAS YOUR FIRST PERFORMANCE?

I first played on stage in high school as a banjo player with a
guitar-player friend of mine. I think we did "Foggy Mt.
Breakdown"....:-)

5. WHO IS THE SINGLE BIGGEST MUSICAL INFLUENCE ON YOUR WORK?

Our banjo player, Janet Beazley, then Bill Monroe, then Paul Simon,
then Jesse Winchester



6. WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORABLE CONCERT YOU'VE ATTENDED?

I saw the Earl Scruggs Revue when I was in high school in 1976.
Recently I saw a Paul Brady concert that was incredible.


7. WHAT IS THE WORST JOB YOU'VE EVER HAD?

Shovelling asphalt on a road-crew in upstate New York.



8. WHAT IS THE BEST JOB YOU'VE EVER HAD?


The one I have now. Leading a band.


9. WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE ARTIST (ALL MEDIA)?

Jesse Winchester, then Jimmy Martin

Irish flute.

14. HAVE YOU EVER COLLABORATED IN SONGWRITING?

Yes, with Suzanne Thomas on "Searching For My Old Kentucky Home", but I
usually don't. It seems like inviting someone in to help you make love
to your wife....


15. CAN SONGWRITING BE TAUGHT OR IS IT A GOD-GIVEN TALENT?

You can teach songwriting, but I don't know if it can be learned.
You've got to have a talent for it, which is usually just an ability to
edit yourself....


16. WHAT SINGLE THING HAS HELPED YOU MOST IN YOUR CAREER?

Career-wise, it was winning the Merlefest songwriting contest. That
still gets us gigs.


17. WHAT SINGLE THING HAS HINDERED YOUR CAREER?


Until recently, having to earn enough money for a family to live on,
but that's better now and I'm full-time in music.


18. WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE DRINK?

Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon

Kinky Friedman

1.. WHERE WERE YOU BORN, WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?

I was born in Charlotte, North Carolina; and grew up in the small textile
town of Mount Holly, North Carolina, 10 miles from Charlotte. I went off to
Military School and college after that when I was fifteen, then graduate
school and different jobs; wound up back in Mount Holly with my wife Linda,
and our two kids, Robert (my drummer now), and Meghan (my sweetheart and a
great fan of live music). I've moved around the state and lived on the
coast; but I've been back in this place since 1981...

I was born in New York City, my family lived around DC for a while, and
right around when I turned 4 we moved up to just outside of Burlington,
Vermont where we lived for the rest of my growing-up. Burlington is the
biggest city in Vermont, but that's not really saying much in terms of size.
It's a great place though -- a college town (with all the arts-friendly,
